Cutting Vinyl with Your Cricut: A Beginner's Guide

Cutting vinyl using a Cricut.com/setup can be a fun and useful skill to have. It not only makes your craft projects look great, but also gives you the opportunity to create custom stickers, décor, and other designs. If you are new to the process, no worries. In this guide, we will show you the steps you need to take to cut vinyl.

1. Gather the required materials
Before you begin cutting vinyl, make sure of the following:
  • Cricut machine (Cricut Maker or Cricut Explore)
  • Vinyl Sheet
  • Transfer Tape
  • Cricut mat (StandardGrip mat is best)
  • Vinyl cutting tools (weeder, scraper, etc.)

2. Set up Cricut Design SpaceCreate a design in Cricut Design Space
  1. Open Cricut Design Space on your computer or mobile .
  2. Choose the design you like or create a new one.
  3. Set the design size according to your vinyl sheet.

3. Apply the vinyl to the Cricut mat
  • Place the vinyl sheet on the Cricut StandardGrip Mat .
  • Make sure the shiny side of the vinyl is facing up.
  • Stick it nicely on the mat so that it can be cut properly in the Cricut machine.

4. Set up the Cricut machine
  1. Load the mat into the machine.
  2. Select materials in Cricut Design Space .
    • Example: Select "Vinyl" material for vinyl.
  3. Check the blade to make sure it fits correctly.

5. Begin the cutting process
  • Click on the "Make It" button.
  • The machine will automatically begin cutting the design onto the vinyl.
  • After the cutting is finished, take the mat out from the machine.

6. Prepare the DesignRemove excess material from the vinyl
  • Remove unwanted vinyl outside the design using a weeder tool .
  • Only part of the design should remain on the mat.

7. Transfer the design
  1. Take the transfer tape and stick it over the design.
  2. Use the scraper tool to press the design firmly onto the transfer tape.
  3. Slowly lift the transfer tape. The design will be stuck to the tape.

8. Apply the design to the surface
  • Apply the transfer tape to the surface where you want to stick the design.
  • Press with the scraper tool so that the design sticks properly to the surface.
  • Slowly peel off the transfer tape.

9. Important Tips
  • Always choose the right type of vinyl (permanent or temporary, depending on your project).
  • Start with small designs to practice.
  • Keep your Cricut blade clean regularly.
